60 percent reggae music and 40 percent for other genres of music.
Reggae is that style of Jamaican music that evolved in the 60s, and later became a major part of the Nigerian music genre with the rise of musical artists like Sunny Okosuns, Terra Kota, Ras Kimono, Majek Fashek, Oritis Williki, Daniel Wilson, Blakkie, Evi Edna Ogholi, Peterside Otong amongst several others.
Reggae music propelled into the mainstream Nigerian music scene in the 80s and as the years progressed, songs the face of Reggae music.
The fusing of many styles with reggae beats has created a new generation of Nigerian reggae artists who have emerged, and blending their styles with reggae, hip hop, R&B, with dance hall traditions.
Artists like Timaya, P Square, Banky W, Pantoranking, Ice Prince, Burna Boy are taking the world by storm using this medium.
Consequently, UNESCO, on November 29, 2018, placed reggae music on the list of “intangible cultural heritage ” of humanity, worthy of preservation, protection, and promotions.
If any society today needs the powerful and instructive messages of reggae music, Nigeria is one.
